Research into insects as food and feed has increased considerably in recent years. Scholars are observing the potential for insects to contribute to a more sustainable, ethical and health-centered food system.

Much of the contemporary research is focused on one insect species, the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens), which presents some of the most promising applications. 

In addition to food and feed, research shows that insects also have a wider range of applications as biofertilizer and bioplastic, unleashing circularity in partnership with nature-based solutions.
